Worry = Sin!

Worrying is the way the responsible citizen of an advanced society demonstrates his virtue:  we feel good about feeling bad. – Mark Steyn; America Alone, The End of The World as We Know It

I have to admit that today’s quote of the day bugs me.  (If you’re reading this on any day other than when I originally posted it, I’ve repeated the quote above.)  I put this up because it made me think, not because I agree with it.

How exactly does worry demonstrate virtue?

On the contrary worry leads to fear and fear, paralyzes action.  What’s worse; worry and fear lead to irrational action which can only make things worse.

Mr. Steyn, who posits in his book that it is America’s “Christian Values” that makes it unique, needs to read his bible more!

If the definition of sin (and I know that for many people the notion of sin may seem to be a bit of a harsh criticism) is to “miss the mark”.  Then worry, is plainly sin!

Jesus told us very clearly that worry, far from being a virtue, has no place in the life of a Christ-follower.

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. [Matthew 6:26-34]

Worry is a lack of faith, which is sin!

 Trust in the promises that Jesus made and the true power of his kingdom and worry will melt away.  Nobody feels good about feeling bad.  Stop fooling yourself and put your trust in the one who knows your needs more deeply and more completely then you know them yourself and He will take care of you, that’s a promise!

One response to “Worry = Sin!”

  1. From your heart you vented the truth like “Old Faithful”. And what you have said is rock solid true. There is one more thought worth considerig regarding worry and the Christian life. If God has promised to provide for His people far more readilly than he does the birds of the air, then worrying (being doubt) is to actively call God a liar.

    Thank you for including the word “fooling”. If the syntax were rearranged a bit the word “fool” would have been appropriate. Your message was as one man to others. And unless we are willing to refer to ourselves as fools I guess we have no right to use that word very often. But truth is truth.

    Bless you for your growing heart. “To the Walls brother!”
